Old.
Happy Saint David's day to you all.... daffodils and leeks indeed!!
Does anyone remember as far back as my experience with the humane rat trap that I bought from B&Q for about fifteen quid? It was back when I had a rat in my garden that was hoovering up the stray bird food. The trap didn't work. I stopped feeding the birds so much for a brief spell and the rat eventually buggered off to pastures greener.
Well, I can now confirm that the rat trap that failed for me has scored in its new location (under someone else's bird feeders!!). Today, near a hotel at Scapegoat Hill, I released my first ever humanely trapped wild rat, back into the wild!! Quite satisfying, and you could tell old ratty was relieved not to be having a spade smacked down on the back of his head!!
They do say "Feed the birds, feed the rats" but as long as those rats are on the outside and not on the inside of my house, then I won't be too angered by them.
My latest "fad" - I use this term loosely, as this is how anything I am remotely interested in gets labelled.... encouragement might be more appropriate than to habitually pour disdain on my interests. - Anyhow, my latest "fad" (even I refer to it as a fad now, I am so damaged!!) is bread making.
I have inherited the family bread making machine. It's not a Rolls Royce of machines, but it serves a purpose and it works. This week I've made two wholemeal granary loaves and I sort of invented a cinnamon and raisin loaf (not that I discovered it, just that I poured random amounts of stuff into the machine to see what would happen).
It was Friday night, about ten PM. I sat chuckling to myself, tucking into my latest dough-based excursion. I think when your Friday night's entertainment is bread related, then it's a sure fire sign that you're getting old!!
Did anyone notice I've spent some money on a new webcam? You now get a better picture when viewing the amaryllis cam!!

Mousetrap.
I am turning into a hunter gatherer.... my inner animal is being released.
Maybe I should have fought for custody of the cats after all!!
Ok, I am going to avoid all the problems associated with adding a mouse tally to each day and create a dedicated mouse post.
Mouse number 1: He likes drinking Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain. (21 Aug 2007)

Mouse number 2: Once played bridge with Omar Sharif. (22 Aug 2007)

Shrew number 3: Had a number one single in 1984 called "Bing Bamma Boom Boom" (31 Aug 2007)

Mouse number 4: A late night chocolate fetish that we all knew would end in tears, actually gave this mouse a fatal nosebleed. It's been a while since my last confirmed kill, so when this bugger ran across the kitchen floor in front of me, I declared chocolate spread war.(3rd Oct 2007)

Mouse number 5: He dreams of sipping Cuba Libres on a far flung desert island shore, and once played in goals for Scunthorpe United. (11th Oct 2007)

Mouse number 6: His cousin, a badger, once pissed on an electric fence to see if it would give his balls an electric shock. The badger is dead now. (16th Oct 2007)

Mouse number 7: Despite what looks like blood all over the mousetrap, we can confirm on closer inspection, it is merely the remnants of several portions of chocolate spread. Just ask this mouse if you don't believe me. (17th Oct 2007)

Mouse number 8: OMG - I was getting quite comfortable with the constant battering of mice. Until now, each and every kill had been quick and clean, with a snap across the back of the neck. This one looked a bit more painful. It made me feel sick thinking about it. Hope it was quick!! The biggest mouse I caught so far. (28th Oct 2007)

Mouse number 9: He gave himself away by virtue of the fact that I am hardly ever at home. I had trodden on the mousetrap and set it off, but the bait still went missing!! Silly mouse!! He's dead now though and I'm not... who's laughing now?? Muhahahahah!! (20th November 2007)

Mouse number 10: What better way to enter double figures than with a bleeder?? Poor beggar, although it looked like instant death from above, I had to move the trap to take this picture. The floor was a pool of blood where his front legs were smashed to pieces!! Ouch!! (21st November 2007)

Mouse number 11: Once went on a "round the world" cruise holiday, where he dined with the stars of the Carry-On movies (24th Nov 2007).

Mouse number 12: He's a fat one, but fast. He tried to eat and run, but Lucifer denied him the opportunity. Eats, shoots and splats!! (26th Nov 2007)

Mouse number 13: Too messy to photograph. A very untidy kill, and one that had to be finished manually!! Unlucky for some!! (3rd Dec 2007)
Mouse number 14: Quick and clean. I'm back on track. Bloodless, straight, old fashioned kill. pleasant return to Luciferian form. (9th Dec 2007)

Mouse number 15: Once had a French pen pal, called Jean Francoise, but they fell out when Jean Francoise insisted on sending numerous pictures of Charles De Gaulle with the legs of a ram grafted on, from his mobile phone. (14th Jan 2008)

Mouse number 16: Following a game of Perudo, this little chap was on his way home when.... well, that'll teach him to drink so much!! (29th Jan 2008)

Mouse number 17: Once this fella was the booking agent for Ken Dodd and the Diddy Men of Knotty Ash. Following Ken's tax evasion exploits, the two friends split, and the mouse was last seen trying to press gang Timeteam's Tony Robinson into making another series of Fat Tulip's Garden. (2nd Feb 2008)

Mouse number 18: One minute we were eating tapas, and having a good laugh at the plight of teenage binge drinkers, when he suddenly and unexpectedly had one sip of wine too many and went straight for the chocolate spread!! "Oh, Monty!!" I cried as his ears felt Lucifer's full force!! alas I fear he did not hear me. (16th Feb 2008)

Mouse number 19: Mustapha Mouse, once sailed single handedly around Black Moss Reservoir in search of hedgehog that could recite the complete works of Edward Lear whilst riding a unicycle. Suffice to say, his search was, like a sponge cake, rather fruitless!! (31st Mar 2008)

Mouse number 20: After taking part in the BBC sitcom "Oops where's my trousers?" alongside June Whitfield, this mouse's ambitions were fulfilled, and there was little left but to throw himself to the mercy of Lucifer the French mousetrap! (10th Apr 2008)

Friday.
Is it really Friday?
In my previous incarnation, the one where I used to be employed, Fridays were a magical part of the week.
Everyone always looked forward to Friday.
Fridays signify the end of the week, the start of the weekend. Perhaps a dress down day? Lunchtime in the pub, maybe sink a lunchtime pint? Early finish.... Making a bolt for the door, and jumping in the car to roar home.
That would be the start of my time.... home time..... relaxing time.
These days, since I opted out of work, the Friday has lost its meaning. It's no longer a special isolated day. It's become part of s homogeneous string of timeless sleeping and waking moments.
The only thing that seems to govern any aspect of my life now, is that the sun rises and the sun sets. I rarely have appointments or dates of significance to work towards, and to be fair, it suits me very well.
You can't beat an afternoon nap on the sofa.
I spent last evening in the extremely pleasant company of my old friend Dan, his mother, and his cousin too. We visited the comedy cellar in Huddersfield and went for a few drinks. It's always good to catch up with Dan, and when I do, I can never understand why we always end up drifting so far apart for so long.
My rat trap is still getting its pockets picked regularly. I am now starting to think that I am going to have to resort to some poison after all. So that was fifteen quid well spent, wasn't it??
Does anyone know of a Sega Megadrive game called Wani-Wani World??
Hope Dan's mum made it to work this morning, and that she has a wicked time on her fortnight long Greek holiday.
Oh, and a quick reminder, or in case you didn't know, there are at least a couple of hundred photos on my flickr album now. Go see!!

Buy cheap....
..... Buy twice.
I know I always advocate the Gary Ford shopping mantra of "buy cheap, buy twice", and usually observe this advice well. Today is an exception.
Dawn's not well.
I dropped Tom at school, took Connor to his school, and dropped The Kirsty at work.
With Dawn in her pyjamas underneath some hastily assembled clothing, and Stevie the wonder dog in the back of the car, I headed off to B&Q for some animal trap action.
It's always a bloody pain parking at B&Q for some reason, and I always try to get near the door, and of course there are never any spaces, and by the time you've reached the door and not found a space then it's far too late to be doubling back. I parked in Comet's car park and walked back.
Poorly Dawn and a hot dog waited in the car. I wouldn't be long..... would I?
As I enter the store, I have to fight my way through crowds of people...... the tills are down, and they are manually writing out item sheets, and then scanning the items at the tills with some sort of hand held device which tells them the price. It looks like slow going.
B&Q is completely the other side of town to my house, and there was no way I was going to come here and leave without my trap.
Eventually I find a member of staff who is not busy writing out little sales slips, and we establish the location of humane rat traps. Aisle 50, the last one of course!! I get there, and there's one rat trap left. The traps I have seen online are going to be about forty quid, and this one (cheaper because there's no postage of course) is much cheaper at fifteen quid. I take it.
I get in a queue for someone to write me a little slip out. I get my little slip written out and I get in another queue for a till. The usual chaos ensues, whereby there seem to be two queues leading to my till, and of course it's the other queue that's doing all the moving.
Puffing and blowing I reach the till, only to be told that the tills are now working, and someone comes and collects my little slip, and I go through the till in a normal fashion. All told, approximately one hour and fifteen quid lighter.
I get home and open the trap, to find that it's about as much use as a chocolate teapot. None of the pieces are manufactured correctly, and I have to start bending little pieces of metal rods to make any of it function.
I have now set the trap, baited it with cheese (a nice piece of Irish Carberry), and to be fair, I think the rat is as safe as he was before I spent the time and money!!
Watch this space!!
In other news, I stuck a few more photos in my Flickr album today - you can see the full moon from last night and some from a bluebell wood today..... what more could you ask for?

You asked for it!
OK, I have been peer pressure cooked into it.
The rat must go, but the rat must also live.
The reseach I have done is not very favourable for our rat friend.
For just a few pounds I can kill him / her / them. For considerably more, I can trap him / her / them and release into the wild.
It comes as no great surprise to anyone who knows me, that I am currently out of work, and am living on the breadline. No income.... no job..... no coffee.... no hope.
The net result of my poverty is that it dictates that the rat(s) must die a horrible, painful, poisonous death.... needs must.
Unless......
.... And this is where I call on all my cunning foxy attributes, to mastermind an alternate plan.
How about this:
You can help me save a rat!!
I promise, that in return for contributions, I will dedicate captured rats to your generosity. Each contributor shall receive a certificate of ownership, and a letter of thanks from each captured rat, along with a photograph commemorating the release.
Click the banner - don't make me kill Ben!! If you don't contribute, then Ben's pain will be on your heads.... not mine!!

It's a rap trap.....
Well, I realise that opinion on rats is very divided. I like him though. I still can't imagine a method of catching or trapping the little fella, that will not endanger any of the feathered chums that visit my locale.
Perhaps it's time for a little rodentary research?
Sunday evening eh? Where'd the weekend go?
Well, if you're sitting comfortably, and enjoying the "Goldie Lookin' Chain" that should be caressing your earlobes by now (if you have the relevant plugins and sound enabled, and choose to listen to it of course - that's a lot of variables, and I imagine most choose not!!), then I'll begin....
It was a dark and stormy night.... Well, OK, it was a warm sunny Saturday afternoon, probably about nineteen degrees centigrade, but that makes for a crappy beginning....
It was a warm, spring, Saturday afternoon, and the lambs were gambling in the fields.... most of them were hooked up to some online poker tournament, but the rest were just playing "stone paper scissors" for cash, which is hard if you only have hooves for hands!!
Me and Dawn/Dawn and I/myself and Dawn/Dawn and myself - all the bases covered - jumped in the car and began heading north....
I lie..... We actually began heading west, along the infamous M62.... M60.... M61 and then north..... This is actually turning into a pretty crappy story already....
OK, I will cut out the flowery prose of the middle man, and render this seemingly long story short, for your benefit you understand!!
We went to visit my Auntie and Uncle in Dumfriesshire.... the rolling lowlands of Scotland. It only takes two and a half to three hours to get there, and it's a great place to be, and my lovely relatives are always most welcoming.
Exactly one year ago to the day since we last visited the same area on our first "away" trip together.
The weather was grand, the scenery breathtaking, and the wildlife out there, if you take time to suck it all in is majestic.
Amongst the creatures on display - A pheasant strutting around the garden lawn. Red kites hunting the thermals, and soaring circularly skyward, out of sight. Wild partridge running along the roadside, dicing with death.
We just stayed for a day really.... not really long enough to appreciate the excellent company of my relatives, or to explore the sights and sounds, and spring bursting across the land.
What it HAS been though, is a most welcomed sojourn in Scotland. I love spending time with my folks, and I love spending time with Dawn. Quality time - that's what they call it!!
Back down to earth.....
Now, about that rat..... The fox wanders off in search of humane solutions.....

The epitome....
... of laziness.
It's Friday, it's a quarter past eight in the evening, and guess what.... I still haven't even got dressed today!!
I ran out of coffee two days ago, and I don't drink tea.... until today that is!!
So what the hell have I been doing all day?
Watching snooker..... Playing "need for speed".... Drinking tea.....
Nothing more, nothing less.
At one point, I was in the kitchen making a cup of tea, when my garden rat decided to show his face. I spotted him swinging around on a coconut, hanging from my bird feeding pole.
This might not sound at all remarkable in any way, but to me it was an incredible feat. Incredible until I saw him skillfully scale the pole to the top, in order to reach a fresh batch of bird food that I had put out.
The pole itself is a sheer metal pole, with no obvious points of purchase for any furry critters to cling to. Roland (well it seems a fitting to give him the name of my 1980's role model) just wrapped his little paws around the pole, and up he went.... I've never seen anything like it. Coming back down, he just did the same thing, but in reverse..... craftily clinging, and descending headfirst.
I ran, grabbed my camera, and managed to set it to video, and caught the resourceful rodent in resplendent glory, shinning the pole. Unfortunately, it seems the little fella has much more about him than I, and of course, I hadn't quite pressed the right button, and missed the whole bloody episode!!
Bugger!!
I am still torn over the concept of having a rat in my garden, but he is a fine specimen, and for his cunning stunts, he has bought himself a little while longer at least.
Right, I better go get dressed.
