Having talked recently about the word jokes.... or puns, as we often call them, not that i like the word "pun".... it feels a bit, i don't know..... sarcastic, somehow?
Anyways..
I had reason to laugh out loud when i remembered a series of prank phone calls.
The first prank phone call was one we regularly used to make as kids...... dial a random number.....
ring ring... ring ring.... ring ring....
"Hello"
"Oh, hello there.... is Mrs Wall there please?"
"Sorry there's nobody here of that name"
"Oh, is Mr Wall there?"
"No i think you have the wrong number"
"Are there any walls there?"
"No, you must have the wrong number"
"Well how does your roof stay up?"

Sorry to anyone who took that phone call from me..... i thought it was funny.
And Bart Simpson made some amazing prank phone calls to Moe's Tavern...... Bart would ask the bartender to locate someone in the tavern, so Moe would always shout the name of the person that Bart was looking for.... here's a selection of who the impish yellow haired kid asked for:

Well here's a photo of a fly agaric that we spotted in the woodland walk near Threave Castle. There's loads of them about just now.... fungi, not castles! Isn't nature wonderful....
Used to love the Simpsons. You must have been a delight as a child! Husband used to remove gates - but I think that was when he was drunk.
ReplyDeleteonce, walking home, very drunk..... i dug a plant up in a garden and transplanted it to the garden next door..... and so ad infinitum..... imagine the owner's surprise when they all puzzled about the plants they never planted...... i imagine this went completely unnoticed to be honest..... but it made me laugh

DeleteI remember when every DJ on the radio was making prank calls, not sure they'd get away with it today - I rarely answer numbers I don't recognise.
ReplyDeletei think prank calls was definitely a time and a place thing..... was it russell brand and i dunno jonathan ross(?) who completely railed andrew sachs and got in a lot of hot water over it?
DeleteThat incident probably was the nail in the coffin for the prank call as light entertainment.
DeleteWe didn't have a phone when I was a kid, not many people did here in Australia, we used the public phone boxes that dotted the neighbourhoods. So we missed out on prank phone calls. I remember some of the Bart Simpson ones, though I haven't seen a lot of The Simpsons.

ReplyDeleteand here was me thinking everyone had at least one special simpsons moment? i mean, i get it, after twenty million seasons, it's very much a shadow of its former self, but some of the early ones were great
